The Erlangen Graduate School in Advanced Optical Technologies (SAOT) and the Institute of Engineering Thermodynamics (LTT) at the School of Engineering of the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg intend to establish a close collaboration with the Petroleum Institute (PI) in Abu Dhabi which was founded in 2001 as a leading institution of higher engineering education and research with the mission to reach a worldwide leading position within a couple of years. In these days PI set up new research programs in several different areas of engineering. Prof. Dr. Alfred Leipertz, Director of the Graduate School and also Head of the Institute of Engineering Thermodynamics, was officially invited by the PI management to visit PI to introduce SAOT and the University and to discuss possible ways of collaboration. On December 6th and 7th, 2009, during this visit several fruitful discussions have been conducted with all members of the management board and with the chairmen of the different departments being active in research. It was agreed upon to start directly the collaboration between SAOT and LTT with the PI Department of Chemical Engineering and with the PI Postgraduate Program which also has been established recently. The explicit desire of the PI management however is to expand this collaboration to additional research units of the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg
