Introduction
Today about 16% of the electrical energy generated worldwide are consumed for lighting purposes. This part will further increase. Therefore energy efficient solutions are required for future lighting systems. The progress in the development of inorganic light emitting diodes (LED) and lasers as well as in organic LEDs (OLED) allows to realize highly efficient solid state light sources even today and opens up a continuously growing market.
Optimized use of light is the second way of reducing energy consumption and increasing efficiency. This requires innovative lighting systems with smart lighting control. Only by developing smart lighting systems the unique properties of solid state light sources can be utilized. Color and quality of light have to meet the demand of the user, add on functionalities will allow new applications like integrated data communication and presentation. Furthermore, leaving the traditional light bulb form factor (small spot for LEDs, area lighting for OLEDs) allows radical and new design ideas for luminaires.

This Pre Conference Seminar addresses engineers and managers working on the application of solid-state light sources as well as luminaire developers and designers interested in new technologies.
